A GP you can see at your convenience

Dr Sonja Brandt | Online GP

Dr Sonja Brandt, online GP, smiling warmly against a neutral background.

I have always been driven by curiosity—a genuine need to understand how things work, from the smallest molecules to the entire human body. That curiosity led me to complete a BSc, Honours, and MSc in Biochemistry at Stellenbosch University. But biochemistry only gave me part of the picture. I wanted the full system, so I pursued my MBBCh at the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating in 2017.

My clinical training began at Helen Joseph Hospital in Johannesburg, followed by community service in primary healthcare clinics across the south of Johannesburg. In those clinics, I was often the only doctor on site, managing a diverse range of conditions with limited resources. That experience taught me to think clearly under pressure, to listen carefully, and to make well-reasoned decisions—because my patients deserved nothing less.

Now, with over nine years of experience in South African healthcare, I understand the realities we all face. Long queues, traffic, and appointments that feel rushed are not just inconvenient; they make it harder for people to prioritise their health. I believe that access to quality medical advice should be straightforward, private, and respectful of your time.

What I treat

A large part of my GP practice focuses on commonly occurring conditions that can be effectively managed from home. When flu season hits, I see a steady stream of patients with fevers, body aches, sore throats, and persistent coughs. I assess your symptoms, rule out complications, and prescribe appropriate treatment – whether that means antiviral medication, symptomatic relief, or simply clear guidance on when to rest and when to seek further care. Similarly, I regularly manage conjunctivitis (pink eye), evaluating the characteristic redness, discharge, and discomfort through a detailed visual assessment during your virtual consultation. I can distinguish between viral, bacterial, and allergic causes and prescribe the right eye drops or treatment without you needing to sit in a waiting room with a contagious condition.

For patients managing chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or thyroid disorders, I provide consistent, structured follow-up care. I review your home monitoring readings, adjust medication dosages when necessary, and ensure your treatment plan evolves with your changing health needs. The goal is stability and control – and the convenience of doing this from your home or office means fewer missed appointments and better adherence to your management plan.

A significant portion of my practice also involves straightforward but essential administrative care. Prescription renewals are one of the most common requests I receive as an online GP. Whether you need a repeat script for chronic medication, a renewal of your contraceptive pill, or just some information or advice about a medication or condition, I handle these efficiently. I also provide reliable sick notes for employers, school notes for children, and referral letters to specialists when a more detailed investigation is required. I even request blood tests when required. These are small, but vital tasks that keep your life running smoothly.

Beyond the physical, I offer a safe, judgment-free space for mental health support. Anxiety, depression, burnout, and work-related stress are increasingly common, and they often manifest with physical symptoms – headaches, fatigue, palpitations, or sleep disturbances. I take these concerns as seriously as any physical condition, offering practical management strategies, lifestyle adjustments, and, where appropriate, prescription support.

How a consultation works

Each virtual consultation is unhurried, with a specific amount of time (usually 15 minutes) set out for each patient. I take a thorough history, ask targeted questions, and conduct a visual assessment where clinically relevant. For example, I may ask you to describe the nature of a rash or demonstrate the range of motion in a sore joint. Using my biochemistry background, I interpret your blood results and lab reports with precision – breaking down complex numbers into clear, practical explanations. As a GP, I don’t assume you understand medical jargon, and I make it a point to explain the mechanism behind your condition, so that you feel informed, not overwhelmed.
